Peace Talks

Peace Talks is a female fronted punk band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, featuring former members of Liebestod and Red Fox, and which has been around since 2015/2016.

Straight forward and angry, Peace Talks is a political charge against the fucked up America the band is living in.

First release in 2016 with a 4-track demo cassette called Demonstration (great name for a demo!) on Cruel Noise Records at a time when the band was still called Peace Talks The Electric Word Life Band (another great name hehe).
Somebody uploaded it online and you can download it here.

Angry but really well built songs, you can think of a lot of other modern american female fronted punk hardcore bands like Krimewatch, Exit Order, Khiis, Exotica etc...

I am not sure about the release date of this one, the bandcamp page of this Tour Tape says January 2020 but I am not sure...
Anyway that's four more songs with a better recording quality than the demo songs.
Still fast, angry but super clean and sharp, Peace Talks is killing it!
I love what the guitar player is doing!

Peace Talks played live on WRCT (a Pittsburgh radio station on the 27/01/2020).
The sound is good, the energy is there and the talking/jokes between the songs are quite hilarious ("All my fans are Jellyfish" ahah).

Latest release before their planned West Coastish tour in April/May (not sure it's going to happen guys...), here is A Lasting Peace, another great 4-track release with a new version of Vanity. I think it's only digital for now but I really hope a proper 7" will be out soon.

You can listen to Peace Talk on Rien à Faire #9.

Noxeema

Noxeema is a new punk band from Portland, Oregon, featuring ex/current members of Defect Defect (check them out!), The Curse, The Stops and probably Remnants.
The band's name comes from Noxeema Jackson, a black drag queen character played by Wesley Snipes in the movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.

These guys play some kind of queer female-fronted 77 punk rock highly influenced by the Avengers, especially in the vocals.
They released their first 7" on dotx3 from Berlin at the end of last year and, without being the "New Deal", is pretty good.

Cold Meat: NEW LP!

If you're not new here you may have already read all the good things I have written about Cold Meat a few months ago and yes, it looks like I am not finished yet...
Hot And Flustered, their long awaited first LP, is finally out on Helta Skelta and Static Shock Records...

The band delivers 10 tracks of great female-fronted punk cooked from the same pots and pans as their last two great EPs...

The guitar and the vocals are the two main things here, the first one hammers the weight of anger against modern life and patriarchy with its super efficient, razor-sharp riffs while the second one blasts it all in the air with maximum velocity; Ashley's throaty, spit-splashed lyrics bursting out of her guts straight to your face...

The more and more I listen to the album the more I enjoy every songs, without being extremely different from each other they all have something special, I love the bass on Cinematic Fashion, the guitar riff and vocals on Bad Mood, the sharp heavyness of Pisces Crises, the mid-tempo rythm and repetitive lyrics of Crawlers...

Well I think you got it now, Hot And Flustered is a very good album!!

Duplo

Just a quick one about Duplo, a young band from São Paulo, Brazil, with the drummer of Rakta.
These guys play an interesting and original psych-post-punk which could be seen a bit as Jim Morrison singing on a danceable brazilian version of some late Joy Division (on LSD)...
Yeah well it doesn't make sense at all.

On their 5-track demo released in late 2018, Duplo delivers some super psyche punk, a bit too psyche sometimes for me I would say, but quite interesting and great to listen to between two Discharge live bootlegs...

Nah what I really like is DOR DOR DOR, BB their 7'' out on Nada Nada Discos (the label of Rakta and Futuro to give you an idea) at the end of last year (2019).
More energic than the demo, you can peek a sight of the punk surface through the smoke of Purple Haze... still not enough to start a slma dance pit at your granny funeral, but it's there...

A nice 7" for a short break away from the hardcore fury...

You can listen to Duplo on Rien à Faire #8.

Facility Men

Facility Men is a punk band from Buffalo, New York, featuring members of White Whale, Plates and probably other bands, which has been around since 2013. The guitarist is also running Hi Lo Recording which has put out many great punk releases from the Buffalo area in the early 2010s.
I was totally blown away the first time I listened to their songs, 6 years ago... blown away by this unique mix of post-hardcore and just-melodic-enough punk rock...
and I still am!

The band first release is a three-song demo tape out on Subject, early 2014.

It was soon followed by the 4-song Futility Men cassette, also released on Subject mid-2014.
All this early materials were finally compiled on one cassette in 2015 on Black Dots Records (with Morning Business as a bonus song).

Something from the DC post-hardcore scene (Fugazi of course) with some great songwriting and a beautiful dose of punk rock (Defect Defect ?)... The closest band I can think of is Pregnant (Wanna See My Gun era)...
Yes they are the Facility Men first two releases and they're masterpieces...

With another tape in 2015 on More Power Tapes, the band shows that it can be really productive while keeping the same quality.
Five new songs with the same recipe, maybe a bit slower this time (Welcome Home), a bit darker as well (Negative Air)?
Another great release.

Finally, after almost 6 years, 2019 sees the first Facility Men vinyl release, and a LP on Big Neck Records s'il vous plait!
It's Fun To Disappear, it's 12 songs including Top Gift, Morning Business, Down in The Valley which were on the 2015 cassette. So 9 new songs which could have been on their previous records, same spirit, same vibe and energy... perfect!
From slow melancholic complains to faster stomping angry shouts, the whole album is a beautiful mix of diversity and ingeniosity... and it doesn't get boring for a sec!
Yes it sounds like it's the last Fugazi album review...

Their sound is still pretty hard to describe, the bass could definitly be post punk, the voice could be post hardcore but also 90s alt rock/melodic hardcore sometimes and the guitar is exactly between all that... But who cares, let's just sit down, relax and enjoy...

And as Big Neck Records writes it:
"Facility Men enjoy Wire, Negative Approach, Christian Death, John Cale, Blitz, the Wipers, Rudimentary Peni, Frank Ocean, the Replacements, Van Halen, and Hank Wood just to name a few. With that being said, please don’t expect any genre exercises or worship from these haggard fucks. Our modern Facility Men have no time for nostalgia or gratuitous nods to the past. The real ones lash out from necessity and It’s Fun to Disappear is hopefully only the beginning."

You can listen to Facility Men on Rien à Faire #8.

Nag

Nag is a punk band from Atlanta, Georgia, which has been around since 2015/2016 and features members of bands like Predator, GHB, Acid Freaks and Beat Beat Beat

It all started with a self-released (later out on Scavenger Of Death) cassette in 2016.
With these 7 tracks of highly surprising punk rock, Nag delivers an original mix of modern post punk with some dark 77 influences (the dark side of the Damned ?).
Hopping from the psyche vibes of Dead Sea to the pure punk gem energy of Identify this demo is a real album, full of diversity and great songs which deserve a proper vinyl release.

A great start for sure!

First vinyl release on Total Punk a few months later, once again Nag doesn't like to do like everyone else and delivers 2 songs way more interesting than the usual low fi garage punk 7" you can (mostly) find on Total Punk.
False Anxiety is a beauty of simple perfect punk song and I'm So Small is an extremely surprising 3 minutes long dark complain, jumping from fast drumming to slow despair...

And the band is not slowing down a bit, releasing two more 7" in 2017:
Keeping it a bit psyche and dark but definitly punk, Nag still has a lot to say.

Next release is a split 7" on Space Taker Sounds with Lip from Baltymore (check their garage post punk out!) in 2018.
Two songs of 80s psyche punk with weird noises and some synth (the end of Surfer!), Nag is not giving up!

And after a little line-up change on bass we arrive to the latest Nag release (december 2019), Red Panda, which doesn't seem to have any physical existence yet.
Three songs for what probably is their best material to date, three songs of high energy post punk with a beautiful 77 vibe, three songs of pure Nag genius...

You can listen to Nag on Rien à Faire #8.

Subliminal Excess

Subliminal Excess is a new hardcore band from Chicago, Illinois with guys from Nightcrawler, 86 Gemini, Affront and Bruised.
Not much more information about these guys except that they just released a great cassette on 11 PM Records with 6 tracks of raging old school hardcore punk (think Negative Approach meets 86 mentality in the pit or more recently a lighter version of Mad Existence) which won't let you sleep peacefully.
It's heavy, it's angry, it's fast sometimes, it's definitly hardcore!

A special mention for the last song of the record, Burning Feeling, which is a beautiful example of how distorted and insane but also touching hardcore punk can be.

You can listen to Subliminal Excess and other angry people on Rien à Faire #8
