Sniffany And The Nits

Just a quick word about Sniffany And The Nits, a new band from Brighton that I had never heard of before their great show at the 2020 Static Shock festival, one of the best surprise of the week end!
Featuring members of Artefact, Joanna Gruesome, the Tubs, the Estate Agents and more.

Their first is a 3-track demo tape on Gob Nation, a real nice demo but sooo far from the band great live performance...
The great old-school-but-insane nurse attitude (Miss Ratchett!!) of the female singer, the perfect smart punk guitar play, the energy... they got everything to be the next sensation (they already are!)!

Think of a british version of Judy And The Jerks with Jack Nicholson playing poker for broken cigarettes in a corner...

Update: the band just released (late april 2020) The Greatest Nits, a 4-track EP, on Thrilling Living Records (I really like the Alice In Wonderland kinda style artwork by Josie Edwards).
The recording is a lot better than on the demo but not neat enough to remove the cool slightly low fi punk atmosphere the band managed to create on the demo.
Girl Factory, Horse Girl, Spider Husband... Nurse Sniffany has completely lost it... every verse, every chorus sound crazier and crazier, the poor Miss Ratchett is lost in a insane discussion with her maniac self that we are (un-?) lucky to witness.
From mid-tempo distressing monologues to faster total punk seizures, The Nits are taking us for a journey into the forbidden part of the human mind... to our greatest delight!

Go check out those guys on stage as soon as the world is back!

Pisse

Pisse is a quartet from Hoyerswerda, Germany, which has been around since 2012 and plays some kind of a-bit-of-synth weird punk sung in german.
The kind of band with which you never really know where you are and have absolutely no idea where you going but you're ok for a ride anyway.
Theese guys already have quite a big discography so I am not going to go through each of their releases but just write a quick word about the "main" ones.

Their first "proper" release is a 2014 6-track 7" on Mamma Leone Records called Praktikum in der Karibik.
Basic, low-fi, with a decent dose of synth and some nice "punk explosion", the band, without having the maestro of today, has already found the "Pisse sound".

In 2015 Pisse releases Mit Schinken durch die Menopause on Phantom Records (note that Phantom Records also released a super low-fi and weird Pisse kassette in 2014).
Well... at the time the band music was already hard to describe...the album starts like a Die Antwoord song before taking a sharp U-turn to a sequence of short punk songs with quite a lot of synth, oscillating between fast and mid tempos... can be a bit unsettling at first...

With Kohlrübenwinter (Turnip Winter) (released on different formats by Phantom Records, Harbinger Sound, Beau Travail, Gafas Del Rigor and In A Car) we are at the album which made me discover the band and made them quite "hype" around here.

In my opinion it's exactly the release where the band finally mastered its recipe; finding the right balance between punk guitar riffs, gang vocals and synth melody...
The dual "question/answer" vocals infuses a great energy to the lot and even if my german is a bit rusty these songs are obviously full of jokes and sarcasm ... and it's probably one of the reason why they became so popular in german speaking countries...

My favorite Pisse song:

Ok now let's pass Pisse's next couple of releases: the short Album Name (really guys?) and the also short Hornhaut ist der beste Handschuh ("Cornea is the best glove"??) which are still wandering on the weird synth punk map but with sometimes a darker post-punk vibe.

Latest Pisse release to date is a selft-titled full length out on, once again, Phantom Records and Harbinger Sound, in January 2020 and featuring ten new songs.
Starting with the fast and very punk Die Fetten Kinder, Pisse is taking us for a ride through some really diverse, but always breathtaking, landscapes... the weird and very german post punk Duracell, the almost hardcore Angenehm Staff, the very surfy ballads of Zu Viel Speed, the "very Pisse" synth punk of C02 Bilanz or Feind/Fehler... to finally conclude with the fun fair tango and chicken calls of Jenny L...

Probably less sarcastic, but still super efficient, the band is seriously keeping us in the dark all along... is there any plan? what the fuck are we doing here?...
Helpless, blindfolded and speechless the only option we got left is to enjoy, until the end, the restless madness of the german punks...

Cold Feet

Cold Feet is a band from Baltimore, Maryland, featuring members of Quitter and Thematix (check them out!) and has been around since 2015/2016...
Oh yes and they play some kind of not-to-harsh punk hardcore!

I'm going to pass quickly on their 2016 demo and 2017 Tour tape because the recording is really bad and, in my opinion, it doesn't give a right of what the band sounds like.

So let's have a look at their late 2018 self-released 7".
Unfortunatly, and once again, it's still a bit too low-fi... and not in a good fun way, more in a "shit I don't feel the energy enough, it should have sounded better" kinda way...
Except for The Score, the first song, which delivers some good punk hardcore stuff the other ones are a bit lost in a not-so-great low-fi garage vibe...

It's not bad no, it's quite fast, the guitar does a good job ... but it's missing something to be really "In your face!" and I feel that we don't get the full potential of what these 4 guys can deliver...
And that's exactly what we will get with their next release!

Released on the 3rd of April on Feel It Records, Punk Entity 12" finally delivers what I was expecting, 8 tracks of great, fast and furious, ripping punk hardcore.

With no songs over the 2 minutes mark, these guys didn't come to fuck around... their straight to the point, raging hardcore à la Career Suicide or Agent Attitude will knock you out before bashing your head against the curb at 200 BPM...
And yes this time, the recording is great!
A higly recommended release!

Duckis

Duckis is a new female-fronted punk band from Tallahassee, Florida, which has released a demo in march 2019 and a brand new tape last february.

Let's pass quickly on the 2019 demo, it's not bad though but it's really low-fi and all songs were re-recorded to be on their next tape... so let's focus on this one!

Lick It Up it's 10 (short) songs (including new versions of the 5 songs from the demo) recorded (and mixed and mastered!) by the band and released on tape by RIP Records.
With a lot better recording than the demo Duckis is delivering a snotty and hopping kind of straight forward punk which reminds me of the first Patsy 7", Depression Breakfast or The Debbie Downers ... so nothing completely new here but it's well made and the songs are diverse enough to keep me interested all along and that's good enough!
Big up for the guitar work which makes most of the songs more enjoyable (especially on Run and Red Pill).

You got your fast and straight froward tunes like Paranoia, Run or The State, some mid-tempo stuff with Squeal and Snails and even some surprises like Oxygen (that I really like) with its strong 70s rock vibe.

A nice release for this new band!

Mr Wrong

MrWrong is an all-female band from Portland, Oregon, which started around 2015 as a duo (drum/guitar) before moving to a trio with a bass.
The band is heavily influenced by the first wave of all-female punk bands like The Slits and Kleenex/LiliPUT... more recently they definitly have some things in common with Necking or some early Shopping

Their 2016 demo tape, out on Cosmonaut Records and called Distraction, was recorded when the band was still a duo (as I understand from the pictures on the cover and the absence of bass).
For some reasons there are only 2 streamable songs on their bandcamp so I only listened to those two, they're simple but efficient Kleenex-influenced female punk rock songs... with strong feminist lyrics and both members singing together (reminding of a slightly better version of some early Girlpool or Primetime).
So 7 songs including a cover of
Do you have a job for a girl like me? by The Delinquents.

On Babes in Toyland (direct reference to the great 90s Riot Grrrl band), the duo is now a trio with the arrival of a bass (and basses are super important!).
And now we're talking! With great energy and better playing, this release is something else, the bass lines bring a nice post-punk side that makes The Slits comparison even more obvious.
Five songs from Distraction were re-recorded with the bass (I suppose as the original versions are not available on bandcamp).
Unusual fact for an american band, there are two songs in german.

First released as a cassette by the band, Babes in Toyland also got out on Water Wing Records in 2017 as a full vinyl album. The LP was quickly sold out but I still hope to put my hand on a copy one of these days!

Create a Place is the new Mr Wrong LP released earlier this year (2020), once again on Water Wing Records. Nine new songs of pure top quality Mr Wrong hopping punk rock.
Highly political, the band doesn't shout some old fashioned punk rock clichés but is clearly inspired by the world as it is now with tracks like White Male Teacher, Primetime President or Holding for Healthcare... And in my opinion it's one of the reason why it makes this band so good, it's a band from today, for real, not a copycat of a fake nostalgic and idealized time...

It's definitly the best recording of the band, each song got its own personality and you can't help but getting swallowed by the great mix of Kleenex vibes and modern post-punk that is now the beautiful recipe of Mr Wrong success...

 Long Live Mr Wrong!!

Android

Android is a new band from Orlando, Florida, and you can forget the wet summer and the herds of retired guys wearing shorts on the beach... these guys are not here for that...
They have just released Chapter 001, a 6-track nasty hardcore punk fury taking you to a super loud and violent dystopian cyber-punk future where hope is definitly not in the dictionary anymore...
Android it's Philip K Dick on speed covering for Henry Rollins on My War, it's an alternative raw version of Blade Runner if Mad Max was its soundtrack...

Furious, noisy, full of anger and rage, Android is fast and heavy, crazy and sludgy...
like a bulldozer with a jet fighter engine at full speed in a Carmageddon game.

Android is great.

Discovery

Discovery is a new punk hardcore band from San Francisco / the bay area.
These guys play some kind of a raging, fast but heavy, style of punk hardcore. They have been compared to Nighstick Justice, Recide and Yadokai and I can also add Jackal and Glue among many others.
So yes that's what you expect: angry and straight to the point!
And that's all I'm asking for!

With this 2-track demo released in 2019, Discovery shows with energy and skills how low-fi punk hardcore should be made...
A very promising start!

But the real stuff was still to come, and here it is now with this brand new 7" on Erste Theke Tontraeger.
With a way better recording than the demo, Discovery gains in power and "efficiency" and the tightness and energy of these 7 songs can be fully appreciated.
Discovery sounds like a headbutt in the face in the middle of a drunken night... the band is not here to let you rest or nicely shake your hips on the dancefloor... these guys are  madly laughing while breaking each and every bones of your body with a crowbar and mercy is not part of their plan...

Earth To Fucker just entered my favorite hardcore punk release list of this beginning of 2020...

Signal

Signal is a female-fronted punk band from New York City which has probably been around since 2016 and features members from The Meltaways and Bas Relief.
The band plays a mix of straight forward low-fi punk with some more noisy mid-tempo post punk influences, the lot warped around strong political statements...

One of their first song, Park After Dark, is about the 2014 Brooklyn Bridge protests  following the Staten Island grand jury’s decision to not indict an officer in the death of Eric Garner and a similar decision by a Missouri grand jury in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. Both were unarmed black men killed by white officers.

The song was released on the 2018 Wharf Cat Records single compilation.
Wharf Cat is a NYC label where you can find Urochromes among other big apple bands.

Signal released its first 7" in 2018 on Ramp Local.
5 songs of fast low-fi angry punk, it makes me think of the great JJ Doll from the Ivy crew...
A good start I would stay!

It was followed in 2019 by the cover of Vice Squad's Latex Love which benefits are donated to the Yellowhammer Fund, an organization which provides funding for anyone seeking care at one of Alabama's three abortion clinics... following anti-abortion decisions taken by several conservative states thanks to Donald "dumbfuck" Trump.

Love Without Moisture, Signal latest release (on Manic Static), is definitly their best release to date. With a better recording than the 7" and well built, fast but sharp, punk songs (and this amazing Virus Carnival, the song of 2020 for sure!), the band gives a lot of dry love, the kind of love that hurts a bit at first... before you beg for more...

Heavy bass lines, deafening guitar riffs, desperate and angry vocals... the comparison with the JJ Doll can only get stronger and it's for the best...
A band to be closely followed!
