Rifle

Rifle is a new band from London, UK, you're probably going to hear a lot about in the coming months as this short demo seems to be only a teaser for what's gonna come next. I don't who these guys are exactly but I would not be surprised if they're connected in one way or another with the Chubby And The Gang / The Chisel gang.
All I know is that one of them plays in Fur from Brighton.

Four tracks, 7 minutes of music, is not that much but it's more than enough to understand that Rifle's already found their own style. Embracing a kind of vintage / demo tape sound which takes us back to the end of the 70s / early 80s, these guys manage to mix the raw side of late 70s British punk (Chelsea, Menace, The Users) with some rock'n roll guitar riffs and a "street attitude" leaving no doubt about the "oi! background" some of these guys have.
Yes there's something of the very obscure (and sometimes very politically dodgy) oi! demos/tapes from the early 80s that all the "real oi! lovers" cherish in secret (I won't mention any names for obvious reasons). Obvious on The Flag, these influences meet a few melodic guitar lines at the end of Feet First that don't fit in the limits of the genre but add a very enjoyable little something that makes the difference between new bands with the right influences and uninspired worship bands.
The vocals are definitely one of the strongest, and catchy, points of Rifle's songs. The singer masterfully delivers a catchy and powerful, but not really aggressive, vocal that sounds, above all, extremely British, and you guys know that this is a big part of the charm that many bands from the perfidious Albion exude. I would like to emphasize my particular fondness for the very good anti-war song Feet First, particularly and sadly relevant these days.

So yes that's a great demo that makes me think of what some Aussie bands delivered a couple of years ago, Gaffer for example (even if they're obviously more influenced by Crisis) and most of all Punter, probably the closest sound to Rifle I can think of at the moment even if they tend to add a lot of woo-hoo here and there and have a stronger "hardcore punk" vibe.

Just go for it, listen to that shit, I'm telling you it's just the beginning of the Rifle era!

PS: No Solution Ltd / Urban Decline Archive made a very limited tape release of the demo in the US if you're interested...

CAMERA SILENS - PUNK The Story of Gilles Bertin (new documentary with english subtitles)

Gilles Bertin was the singer of CAMERA SILENS, probably the best band to come out of the French punk/oi! scene in the 80s.
In 1988, after one of the biggest armed robbery which ever took place in the south of France, he disappears.
28 years later, in 2016, he finally surrenders to the police.

This is his story related by French television in January 2021.

Pour la gloire!
RIP.

English subtitles by myself.

Ad Vitam

Let's start 2021 with something a bit different.
Ad Vitam is a new Oi! band from Montreal, Canada, which released a 4-track demo in december as part of the Demo Fest 2020 initiative (crazy idea of releasing 200 (!!) new demos from bands from Canada but not only on the same day on bandcamp to raise fund for a charity).

Unfortunately I could not find much information about the 4 skins from La Belle Province and their biography, only that these guys play first class, high energy, rock'n roll oi!, which makes me guess that Ad Vitam is not their first rodeo.

Ad Vitam plays fast, but not fast in a hardcore punk way, fast in a great rock'n roll way which reminds me of some of the greatest names of modern Oi! like The Clichés, Crown Court or The Janitors
With three songs in English and one in French the band clearly states their Quebec identity but the "funny" thing is that the singer is singing so fast that it almost sounds Spanish! I honestly believed at first that they were singing in Spanish, reminding me of the beautiful first 7" of the Madrid band Knockout

I think you got it now, this demo is a real bomb!

I really hope to hear more from these guys ASAP!
I don't listen to that much Oi! any more but when I do that's exactly the kind of first class music I wanna hear!

You can listen to Ad Vitam on Rien à Faire #18.

Impotentie

Impotentie is a 2-piece band from Montreal, Canada and has been around since 2017 or something.
These two guys are definitely not newbies in the punk business, Matt played in Thee Nodes and the great No Negatives before joining Kevin aka Spoiler in this soft "wood" project.
So Spoiler is originally from the Flemish part of Belgium and started his punk career by the SxE side with Justice (from Belgium) which had quite a success in the Youth Crew scene at the time (but never convinced me). Since he moved to Montreal he has been spotted in several angry musical acts as Sanction A, Omegas, Proxy and Stigmatism (a duo as well, a bit obsessed by Vinnie as weird as it can sound)... and is on the way to become a living encyclopedia of early NYHC.

So yes Impotentie's lyrics are in flemish and, obviously, Spoiler is the one singing them...

The duo first release is the Demonstratieve Opnamens cassette (Swollen City Records) which then became a 7" on Drunken Sailor. This 6-track demo is an interesting mix of early french or italian oi! with a lot of guitar fuzz ... Sounds weird but I can imagine the guys from Rough or Basta jamming with Reich Orgasm in Antwerp while trying to sound like Mudhoney...
A nice EP but easy on the fuzz guys...

Leopold II is niet Dood Genoeg, the band first LP (out on Roachleg Records), is a political charge against the "leftovers" of the belgian colonial system implemented under Leopold II reign. I don't understand Flemish but they made it quite clear and the Leopold II ballad is obviously about it. It's interesting to see how these songs written a few months before George Floyd death perfectly fit with the debate about systemic racism and colonialism past which erupted afterwards.

On the musical side the two hardcore veterans have softened their Fuzz obsession and hardened their oi! influences...
Let's be clear it's almost an oi! album, the kind which is not made by Skinheads but by punk/hardcore enthusiasts who take the best of it and leave all the usual and tiring clichés at the door.
The bouncy bass lines, the melodic but sad guitar lines and even a few gang vocals... in these 6 songs (without the intro and the ballad) there is everything you can expect from a classic but good oi! band from the heavy guitar side.

To be honest it took a few listens for the album to grow on me but I really enjoy it now... a lot more than the demo.

N,J'Oi!

The Chisel

The Chisel is a mysterious band from London (I think) which has released Deconstructive Surgery (its first EP) on La Vida Es Un Mus a few weeks ago.

These guys play a great kind of fast and high energic oi! which brings us back to the golden age of No Future Records and all the great skunk bands like Blitz and Crux.
The singer actually sounds a lot like Fergus from The Strike And Emergency and as I know he is still very active in the scene I wonder if the mysterious singer of The Chisel would actually not be him...

Fast and angry The Chisel is a super punk pissed off version of your classic oi! band which doesn't forget to deliver some skinhead anthems like Billy Aaron and Rat Running Scared, two songs which could have perfectly fit on a 4-skins album (Gary Hodges era).

A fantastic EP that will equally delight oi! and punk fans!

Get it!

Benny and The Roids

Benny and The Roids is a 77 punk/oi! band from Los Angeles, California.
The name comes from an 80s Disney educational film about steroids abuse, in case you were wondering (and it's a good name).
They play this great type of Oi! heavily influenced by 77 punk and Rock'n roll
and I love it!

They released a great Demo in 2015 which finally came out as a 7'' last August on Discos MMM, Hectic World (and Sorry State ?).
Go grab it!

As the RIP suggests on the cover the band doesn't exist naymore... too bad!

You can listen to Benny And The Roids and other anthems in Rien à Faire #4
