Moron is hailing from Berlin, Germany and has probably been around since
2017.
A big part of the new Berlin scene seems to be revolving around the
Allee Der Kosmonauten (ADK), T-Rex's recording studio and
the
Billo
tape label (which actually released an
ADK bands tape compilation). And many (great) recent bands claim to belong to ADK, as a
certificate of the new wave of punk... I'm talking about bands like
Liiek,
Die Schiefe Bahn,
Aus,
Benzin
or
Gesture for example.
And Moron erupted out of this scene in 2018, as a total surprise
(at least for me), putting, once again, Berlin at the top of the punk
game!
This 6-track demo tape released in 2018 totally blown me away at the time (I even put one of their song in my 2018 Best Of Compilation), this is high class female fronted punk from start to finish!
I am a total sucker for this kind of stuff and within the first seconds
of Puss-filled Eyes, Moron immediately joined my personal
pantheon of ~2015~2018 female fronted releases with the
JJ Doll 7", some
early Judy And The Jerks, the
first Patsy 7" and of course the
Ubik
7". Ok I am going to be a bit geeky here but Moron fits perfectly
in a very specific kind of female fronted punk which can be quite fast,
edging with hardcore punk sometimes without really falling into it, and
is (of course) a total blast!
Indeed with super catchy fast tracks like Puss-filled Eyes,
Watte, Mr Eat It All or Pass Me A Bucket, the Berliners
easily please the "hardcore kid" in me, I mean the drummer is doing a
fantastic job, the bass lines are melodic and catchy as hell and the
singer is killing it so no reasons to not be seduced right ?
But on top of that the four Germans add a perfectly mastered touch of
mid-tempo punk on a couple of tracks (edging with post-punk on some
parts of Stant which even has a bit of saxophone) pleasing the
old "please surprise me guys I've heard it all" jerk well awake in
me!
Ok I think you got it now, I fu*** love this demo!
But after that... Nothing about Moron any more, I was checking
from time to time if something new was popping up somewhere but no...
nothing!
The demo was not so much acclaimed, it did not seem like so many people actually talked about it
so in the end I finally resigned myself to the fact that this little gem will forever stay only a small, solitary and underrated explosion of beauty...
Until last December!
Yes yes yes! Moron is back!
Damn I could not believe it and jumped on the digital release as fast
as a desperate superpower on a hypothetical vaccine!
So after almost three years, what's left of the demo energy ?
Well first of all with 2 songs out of 8 longer than 2 minutes the band
keeps it punk and short and Moron is still Moron (which is
a good thing!) BUT things have changed slightly...
Ok there are a little bit more mid-tempo parts around but the pace is
quite similar in the end and this new tape starts with a blast with
Light Bulb and Mosquito Traps which quickly set things
straight: there is no time to waste here!
No the main change is rather in all the small musical explorations that
the group allows itself here and there. Yes there are still those great
little guitar parts beautifully punctuating the tracks but also a few
more unexpected things: A "rougher" vocals tone in
Ants In My Pants, a weird saxophone start à la
Lucrate Milk in Salt, some "wawa" distorted riffs on
Popeye etc... the kind of details you discover after several
listens and makes you gently nod your head in silent appreciation... you
know what I mean!
Don't get me wrong, these songs are not full of crazy ideas, no they're just exactly what they need to be straight forward, punk, fast but diverse and innovative enough to be great!
For some reasons it took me more time to be hooked up by this one than by the demo, probably because of the mix (the "sound") which is a bit different. So I strongly advise you (dear reader) to take your time and enjoy this beauty!
You can listen to Moron on Oktober Fist #1 and Rien à Faire #18.
N,J'Oi!
