Jackal

Jackal is a young hardcore band from Florida and has probably been around since 2016.

Well to be honest, since the beginning of this blog I wanted to write a little something about these young swamps fennecs. Their demo and 7" blew me away and I was just waiting for a more recent release to keep it nice and fresh... and here is finally the occasion.

These guys play some great punk hardcore with a pinch of toughness, Negative Approach and SS Decontrol will of course immediately come to mind but also some more recent (great) bands like Back To Back, Obedience, Mind Violence and many others...

From the very first seconds of their 2017 demo, you know you have not stepped in a lounge bar: super dirty and noisy guitar sound, deafening cymbals, stomping drums and heavy (but not too much) vocals, these guys came here to stomp on your faces...
Sometimes fast, sometimes very fast, Jackal does not forget the heaviness of the mosh parts and respects perfectly all the codes of the genre: this is definitely hardcore baby!

The songs are dealing with classic hardcore themes about putting yourselves together, taking your life back, getting rid of bad influences etc... Predictable but efficient!

Two years later, the Boston label Pain Killer Records specialised in Boston style HxC (gnarling vocals all over the place) releases the band first EP.
Jackal delivers 4 super aggressive, fast and heavy tracks which match perfectly the label criteria. Made from the same mould as the demo, this EP confirms that Jackal rules!

With a great sense of danger, urgency and violence of the Me-Against-the-world spirit (Jackal, Robbed Life, Cornered) but without putting aside the positive lessons of HxC (Help Yourself), these young dudes master a great EP in the tradition of the best 80s American Hardcore bands.

And here is their latest release which allows me to have Jackal on RAF!
Recorded live at the Paincave (Pain Killer Records recording studio I suppose) last September, we finally get to have a better idea of how Jackal sounds live.
Within these 8 songs (including two new songs from an upcoming EP), Jackal keeps stomping again and again some great hardcore punk. A great recording and live energy give to the whole lot a more interesting value than most live releases have (in my humble opinion).
I still believe the southern boys sound better on their EPs but well, I am a grumpy old man...

Digital only for now, it will be released as a tape in a few days.

Can't wait for the new EP!
oh and please make some new t-shirts, I love the artwork of the old ones but did not manage to order one on time!

Heavy Discipline: LP!

As you may know I already wrote a few words about the Negative Approach influenced hardcore of Heavy Discipline when they released their demo one year ago.

Well the four angry guys from Pittsburgh are back with a LP on Pain Killer Records (which also released the demo) and believe me, the mood has not changed over the past year!
First of all I really like the artwork, inspired by the 80s/90s classic hardcore drawings ahah these guys are really making ugly faces!

To be honest it took me a few listens to really get into this LP. These guys know what they are doing and master every second of their record to make it fit perfectly in the "hardcore codex".
Yes we are somewhere between Negative Approach and the Boston scene, think Boston Strangler, the british guys of Violent Reaction, Mad Existence and many others...
So nothing new under the basement ceiling (and I tend to like bands taking risks) but in the end I think I am quite convinced. It's reeeeally well played, the songs are diverse enough to not feel like the same track going on over and over, the energy is pfffiuu crazy... well this what I expect from a good hardcore band after all!

But what really blew me away in this record is the drumming! Tom Moran has played in many great Pennsylvania based bands in the past years, including Blood Pressure and No Time but also more recently Loose Nukes (in which he plays bass) and Machine Gun. I had the opportunity to see him behind the drums the two times I saw Machine Gun last year and damn I have never seen anyone wearing tight blue jeans playing soooo fast, absolutely unbelievable.
It's just so fast, so neat with perfectly mastered snare and toms bursts, like a proper machine gun...this guy is taking us to a war zone and, in my opinion, brings this record to another level...

A good but not surprising album, just go for it with your eyes closed if you are into this kind of hardcore!

Buggy

Do you guys like Negative Approach
I guess you do and these two gentlemen from New Jersey as well!

This 5-track tape released in march (including a cover of NA) is a great example of the legacy of the Detroit band: super loud stomping drum beats, heavy buzzsaw guitar riffs, bass lines you can hardly distinct in the noisy mess and of course the famous brutal vocals that made NA so popular among skinheads.

More recently it also makes me think of the angry french guys of Don't Need You and Gutter (Lille crew!) or Heavy Discipline from Pittsburgh or the first Boston Strangler lp with a more low fi recording...

Oh yeah these two guys also play in Gel (and at least one of them plays or played in School Drugs), War Records is going to release their tape, Buggy is Tony's cat name and I love the cover art by Jon Mayo...

Heavy Discipline

Heavy Discipline is a punk hardcore band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with members coming from Loose Nukes, Machine Gun (the drummer), Hounds of Hate, Chronic Abuse etc...
These guys know their classics by heart.

The band has released a demo on Painkiller Records early last year and has toured all around since then.
Classic 80's hardcore punk from the tough side, it makes me think a lot of 86 mentality (less RRRRRoooWWW though).
Well there is nothing new but it's super fast, angry and...well... good!

You can listen to Heavy Discipline and a lot of other great stuff in Rien à Faire #6.

Goon

Goon is a four-piece hardcore punk band from Denver, Colorado.
These guys play some furious and crazy hardcore punk with brillant weird parts
and I love it.

It all started with a low-fi 6-tracks demo in 2015.
Despite the quality of the recording each song is bursting to
your face with frustration and anger. The drums are pounding it while the singer
tries to tear off the wall of noisy guitar riffs with his vocals.

The following year, in 2016, the band released another tape
featuring 2 songs of the demo and 2 new songs,
all recorded during rehearsal sessions.
The recording is still super rough and not so pleasant to listen to.
But Torture is a killer!

But let's skip 3 years of touring and furious shows to come to 2019 and what
is of interest for me right now.
First the live tape Alive ... In the Cellar of Your Mind, 16 minutes of
an intense basement show recorded in summer 2019. The quality is not bad
for a live recording and man this version of Torture (at around 6:00)
is just fucking great!

But the real deal is the release of Natural Evil on Convulse Records in November 2019.
Finally a quality recording, Goon can fully express on vinyl
all the energy and madness of their live performances.
7 songs of furious hardcore punk, yes everybody was expecting it mean and nasti
and there is no disappointment here, none at all.
But man listen to the break of Spit and the 8 minutes long Pig II
(yes 8 minutes on a hardcore punk album!) to really understand the capacity,
the wideness of the mutant hardcore sound of Goon (man there is
some saxophone on this track!)

And that's what makes the difference between a good and a great band...

Damn I would love to see them live...

Jocko

Jocko is from Omaha, Nebraska, and before anything else
I wanna say that I FUCKIN LOVE JOCKO! Ok, said!

It all started with a low-fi Demo in 2016 which is really
really below what was going to come next...

...And two years later it's the long awaited blast...
For Expression, their first full length, the 5 guys deliver 11 fantastic songs of
hardcore meets hip-hop. Rage Against The Machine of course but if Zack
had kept the attitude of Inside Out... HxC as F###!!!

This album is great, really.
First released as a tape on Not Normal Tapes
it's now available on vinyl on Dog Years Records.
If any European label is reading this... please... do something!

A tour in Europe next year guys ?

You can listen to Jocko on Rien à Faire #5.
