Duplo

Just a quick one about Duplo, a young band from São Paulo, Brazil, with the drummer of Rakta.
These guys play an interesting and original psych-post-punk which could be seen a bit as Jim Morrison singing on a danceable brazilian version of some late Joy Division (on LSD)...
Yeah well it doesn't make sense at all.

On their 5-track demo released in late 2018, Duplo delivers some super psyche punk, a bit too psyche sometimes for me I would say, but quite interesting and great to listen to between two Discharge live bootlegs...

Nah what I really like is DOR DOR DOR, BB their 7'' out on Nada Nada Discos (the label of Rakta and Futuro to give you an idea) at the end of last year (2019).
More energic than the demo, you can peek a sight of the punk surface through the smoke of Purple Haze... still not enough to start a slma dance pit at your granny funeral, but it's there...

A nice 7" for a short break away from the hardcore fury...

You can listen to Duplo on Rien à Faire #8.

Facility Men

Facility Men is a punk band from Buffalo, New York, featuring members of White Whale, Plates and probably other bands, which has been around since 2013. The guitarist is also running Hi Lo Recording which has put out many great punk releases from the Buffalo area in the early 2010s.
I was totally blown away the first time I listened to their songs, 6 years ago... blown away by this unique mix of post-hardcore and just-melodic-enough punk rock...
and I still am!

The band first release is a three-song demo tape out on Subject, early 2014.

It was soon followed by the 4-song Futility Men cassette, also released on Subject mid-2014.
All this early materials were finally compiled on one cassette in 2015 on Black Dots Records (with Morning Business as a bonus song).

Something from the DC post-hardcore scene (Fugazi of course) with some great songwriting and a beautiful dose of punk rock (Defect Defect ?)... The closest band I can think of is Pregnant (Wanna See My Gun era)...
Yes they are the Facility Men first two releases and they're masterpieces...

With another tape in 2015 on More Power Tapes, the band shows that it can be really productive while keeping the same quality.
Five new songs with the same recipe, maybe a bit slower this time (Welcome Home), a bit darker as well (Negative Air)?
Another great release.

Finally, after almost 6 years, 2019 sees the first Facility Men vinyl release, and a LP on Big Neck Records s'il vous plait!
It's Fun To Disappear, it's 12 songs including Top Gift, Morning Business, Down in The Valley which were on the 2015 cassette. So 9 new songs which could have been on their previous records, same spirit, same vibe and energy... perfect!
From slow melancholic complains to faster stomping angry shouts, the whole album is a beautiful mix of diversity and ingeniosity... and it doesn't get boring for a sec!
Yes it sounds like it's the last Fugazi album review...

Their sound is still pretty hard to describe, the bass could definitly be post punk, the voice could be post hardcore but also 90s alt rock/melodic hardcore sometimes and the guitar is exactly between all that... But who cares, let's just sit down, relax and enjoy...

And as Big Neck Records writes it:
"Facility Men enjoy Wire, Negative Approach, Christian Death, John Cale, Blitz, the Wipers, Rudimentary Peni, Frank Ocean, the Replacements, Van Halen, and Hank Wood just to name a few. With that being said, please don’t expect any genre exercises or worship from these haggard fucks. Our modern Facility Men have no time for nostalgia or gratuitous nods to the past. The real ones lash out from necessity and It’s Fun to Disappear is hopefully only the beginning."

You can listen to Facility Men on Rien à Faire #8.

Nag

Nag is a punk band from Atlanta, Georgia, which has been around since 2015/2016 and features members of bands like Predator, GHB, Acid Freaks and Beat Beat Beat

It all started with a self-released (later out on Scavenger Of Death) cassette in 2016.
With these 7 tracks of highly surprising punk rock, Nag delivers an original mix of modern post punk with some dark 77 influences (the dark side of the Damned ?).
Hopping from the psyche vibes of Dead Sea to the pure punk gem energy of Identify this demo is a real album, full of diversity and great songs which deserve a proper vinyl release.

A great start for sure!

First vinyl release on Total Punk a few months later, once again Nag doesn't like to do like everyone else and delivers 2 songs way more interesting than the usual low fi garage punk 7" you can (mostly) find on Total Punk.
False Anxiety is a beauty of simple perfect punk song and I'm So Small is an extremely surprising 3 minutes long dark complain, jumping from fast drumming to slow despair...

And the band is not slowing down a bit, releasing two more 7" in 2017:
Keeping it a bit psyche and dark but definitly punk, Nag still has a lot to say.

Next release is a split 7" on Space Taker Sounds with Lip from Baltymore (check their garage post punk out!) in 2018.
Two songs of 80s psyche punk with weird noises and some synth (the end of Surfer!), Nag is not giving up!

And after a little line-up change on bass we arrive to the latest Nag release (december 2019), Red Panda, which doesn't seem to have any physical existence yet.
Three songs for what probably is their best material to date, three songs of high energy post punk with a beautiful 77 vibe, three songs of pure Nag genius...

You can listen to Nag on Rien à Faire #8.

Subliminal Excess

Subliminal Excess is a new hardcore band from Chicago, Illinois with guys from Nightcrawler, 86 Gemini, Affront and Bruised.
Not much more information about these guys except that they just released a great cassette on 11 PM Records with 6 tracks of raging old school hardcore punk (think Negative Approach meets 86 mentality in the pit or more recently a lighter version of Mad Existence) which won't let you sleep peacefully.
It's heavy, it's angry, it's fast sometimes, it's definitly hardcore!

A special mention for the last song of the record, Burning Feeling, which is a beautiful example of how distorted and insane but also touching hardcore punk can be.

Freon

Freon is a new band from St Louis, Missouri, featuring members of Bad Example, Mom, The Warden, Dentist and Rüz.

To be honest I haven't found much more information about the band except that they have released a great 6 track cassette on 11 pm records.
Fast and angry with gnarly female vocals, Freon is not sending any positive vibes but a massive dose of negative hardcore punk and the result is... great!

And I love the Philip K.Dick / Blade Runner inspired artwork by the way (made by Malaya Harris from Side Action).

Let's hope Freon will have a vinyl release soon (I really don't understan this tape mania).

You can listen to Freon on Rien à Faire #8.

MSS FRNCE

MSS FRNCE is a punk band from Paris, France, which has been around since 2015 or something.
These 4 guys play some super fast punk hardcore, a bit like Youth Avoiders to stay with the parisian bands, but sung in french, and it's a total blast!
I really appreciate the fact that all the songs are in their language, I have always thought that it's super important to express yourself, through punk rock, in your mother tongue.
And well french is great hehe.

First release in 2016 with I, a 8 track cassette, which is a good introduction to the fast sound of our parisian lovers.

Ah yes they also love to make a lot of videos... why not after all hein.

Here comes 2017 and a second release named II (really cool names guys).
4 great punk hardcore tracks with a better sound and an improved technique compared to the 2016 release.
They even cover GLOSS in french (Outcast Stomp from the demo translated in Les Exclues), and that is definitely a sign of good taste.

One year later they finally release their first vinyl; III is a beautiful 6-track 7 inch totally produced by the band. I have actually bought one of these at one of their shows after having being super impressed by their super high energy live performance.

What can I say ? same recipe but the taste just gets better and better...
Great recording and really smartly built songs, this 7'' is, in my opinion, their best release.

We finally get to their latest release (october 2019) which is called... IV yes!
First 12" for the band with 7 new tracks all under the 2 minutes mark as usual.
Martin has tried to work on his vocals with more diverse approaches this time. There is even a real Guerilla Poubelle touch on En Dernier and more generally a slight feeling of melodic hardcore that was not on the previous records.

Well once again it's another very good release and will definitly listen to V when it will be out (sometimes this year probably hein?).

Note that the cover is designed (as on all their other releases) by Simon Sek and has to be "built" when you buy the record... DIY right ?? Great idea!

Maximum Roach

Maximum Roach is a new punk band from Arizona.
These 4 guys play some dark and noisy punk hardcore with a lot of distorted, highly deranged and nasty slower parts and a few great names of freak punk/hardcore bands immediatly come to mind like Acrylics, Nasti but also Glib or Bad Breeding.

They released a 9-track tape in January and yes you guessed right... I absolutly love it!
It's super dark, full of anger, despair and screams... the late Black Flag influence is clearly there but without the super heavyness.
In my opinion it may be the best release since the beginning of the year and will probably be in the End of the Year Top of a lot of people.

Please guys...
Give us some more really soon!

Can't wait to hear more from those guys.

Testbunker

Testbunker is a punk band from Hamburg, Germany, which plays some kind of raw 80s deutschpunk which reminds me of the beginning of Upright Citizens or Slime

Their first release is a 5-track demo in 2015. Raw and fast, the band clearly walks in the path of their 80s german colleagues. Not original but quite enjoyable.

Two years later (in 2017) Testbunkers releases Im Würgegriff a new tape (5 tracks) on Uga Uga Tapes (tape label from Hamburg).
Same recipe, some straight ahead angry deutsch punk.
2 songs from the demo were re-recorded for this tape.

And here is their last (and best!) release to date!
Verdomoe Idioot got out in december 2019 and proves that the band is getting waaay better. With these 7 new songs (great recording!), Testbunker is playing faster, tighter and better, mixing their 80s deutschpunk with classic 80s hardcore (still sung in german).
It's a great improvement and a great release!

Any vinyl coming soon?
